As EPS camp passes resolution, OPS counters with two 'crucial' demands

AIADMK TTV Dhinakaran K Palaniswami no-trust motion against Palaniswami govt M K Stalin Panneerslevam tamil nadu government indian express news

Meanwhile, the AIADMK led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E.K. Palaniswami has declared as null and void the appointment of T.T.V. Dhinakaran as the Deputy General Secretary while they have also adopted resolutions against Sasikala.

Removing Sasikala and her family members from the party, and ordering a probe into Jayalalithaa's death were the two key demands raised by the "OPS group", which broke away to form a separate outfit, AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma), in February. As party general secretary, Sasikala has all the powers to appoint or remove people from the party... "It is clear by implication that the affidavits (in support of Sasikala and Dhinakaran) filed by them ( EPS camp) were false and in any case can not be considered by the commission", it said. Downplaying Palaniswami's camp taking a stand against him and Sasikala, Dhinakaran today said, "Ministers too are our MLAs, they support us".

Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and rival faction leader O Pannerselvam have met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to give final touches to their merger plan.

The resolution, however, stopped short of expelling him and Sasikala from the party, which is one of the main pre-condition of the OPS camp for the merger.

The stage now also looks set for a shift in Tamil Nadu politics with faces of superstars like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan popping up at events organised by political opposition in the state, amidst rumours that Rajnikant will emerge as the face of BJP in Tamil Nadu and Kamal Hasan's vexation with the ruling AIADMK factions.

Palaniswami was here to attend the swearing-in ceremony of M. Venkaiah Naidu as Vice President. Sources said that the merger can occur as early as August 15. To protect itself, the EPS fraction publicly distanced itself from Sasikala and Dinakaran, and some prominent leaders even said that both had nothing to do with the party.

Dhinakaran has faced a challenge from senior AIADMK leaders ever since he was was named deputy general secretary by his aunt Sasikala, who is now lodged in a Bengaluru prison after being convicted in the disproportionate assets case.

However, he was arrested for allegedly trying to bribe an Election Commission official to buy (for his faction) the "frozen" two leaves symbol of the AIADMK during the RK Nagar polls.
