EU Calls a Meeting of Ministers Over Egg Contamination

Traceability on the eggs from the Netherlands contaminated with fipronil is continuing, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

It is believed the toxic substance was introduced to poultry farms by a Dutch business named Chickfriend, and was initially brought in to treat red lice, a nasty parasite in chickens.

Supermarkets have recalled eggs in their millions in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands as a result.

In late July, millions of eggs in Belgian, Dutch, German and other European Union states' supermarkets turned out to be contaminated with fipronil, which is considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be a moderately hazardous substance. However, food standards agencies played down the risks for anyone who already had the tainted eggs.

A number of eggs and egg-related products such as salads, quiches and sandwiches have already been withdrawn from major United Kingdom supermarkets.

The probe into insecticide-infested eggs in Europe is intensifying with company officials in the Netherlands being arrested for their suspected involvement in a scandal that has led to millions of eggs being pulled from shelves.

The British Egg Industry Council said shell eggs on sale to consumers in the United Kingdom were not affected.

Minneapolis school building collapses; rescuers search for victims
Jacobson, the school spokeswoman, said Carlson graduated with the Minnehaha Academy class of 1953 and went to Sunday school there. Minnehaha Academy student Taytum Rhoades was one of those practicing in the gym when the building shook and lights went out.

"I proposed to hold a high-level meeting gathering the ministers concerned as well as the representatives of the food safety agencies in all member states involved as soon as we have all the facts available", he said in a statement.

Two persons have been arrested in the Netherlands over the ongoing contaminated eggs scandal, the Dutch public prosecutor stated on Thursday.

Romania has found one tonne of egg yolk which was contaminated by fipronil in a warehouse to the west of the country.

The Korea Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it will analyze the products over the next three months and look for signs of contamination with the insecticide Fipronil.

The problem first surfaced earlier in August, when Aldi withdrew all its eggs from sale in Germany.

Though no illnesses have been reported, prosecutors said there is evidence that public health has been threatened by "the delivery or application of the biocide Fipronil in poultry houses in the egg sector". However, a Belgian supplier that is believed to have colluded with the Dutch company, is also under investigation.
