Spain on course to surpass Greece as European Union migration destination

WATCH: African refugees 'forced off' boats near Yemen coast

"We assume that some of the change is due to the fact that the route [to Spain] is considered a safe route up to the coast through Morocco", Joel Millman, a senior IOM spokesman, was quoted by AFP news agency as saying.

On Thursday morning, Spanish coastguards said they had rescued 10 men from sub-Saharan Africa in a rickety boat off Tarifa in southern Spain.

According to the IOM, 117,795 refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017 so far, with nearly 83 percent arriving in Italy.

BEACHGOERS got a surprise on Wednesday when a rubber dinghy full of migrants arrived on a Cadiz beach.

Spain witnessed a threefold increase in refugees entering the country using the sea-route this year, when compared to the same period last year, the United Nations migration agency said Friday.

According to data compiled by the International Organization for Migration, between the start of the year and July 16, 7,389 migrants had arrived in Spain on what is known as the "Western Mediterranean Route". The migrants in Spain most often have no identification and are usually young males from Morocco, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Ivory Coast and a handful of other West African countries, according to quotes by police.

More than 11,000 migrants arrived in Spain in the first half of this year, compared to over 13,000 in all of 2016.

Sales of USA passenger cars decline in July
Deliveries for Ford's F-Series rose 5.8 percent, while Fiat Chrysler's Ram brand sales were little changed from a year earlier. Carmakers have used lower-margin sales to rental fleets as a way to avoid shutdowns in plants.

He also said they were using smaller crafts to cross the short but choppy sea to Spain in the hope of slipping in undetected.

As a result, they are entry points for migrants who regularly try to climb high double border fences or force their way through them with wire cutters, or hide in vehicles crossing the frontier.

All of the migrants - about 700 - were repelled by the Moroccan and Spanish authorities.

The teenagers will be taken to migrant reception centres, where they can apply for asylum in Spain.

More than 1,700 have been rescued from the water so far this year, with the month of June alone seeing more than 900.

Spain and Morocco agreed yesterday to close the Tarajal post to freight traffic for a week because of recent migrant crossing attempts.
