DE reports West Nile found in local horse

West Nile virus found in mosquito sample in Sycamore

There has not been a human case of West Nile virus since 2006, however, public health says this positive mosquito pool is proof the virus is present in Oxford County. The 44-year-old man is from Clermont County, east of Cincinnati.

Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus were first detected in CT in 1999, and tests have found them present in this state every year since.

A southwest OH man is the state's first confirmed case of West Nile virus this year.

The primary way people get the virus is through the bite of an infected mosquito.

With mosquito season upon us, the West Nile virus has been making its rounds across the state. However, about one in five patients develop a fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.

"We don't want people to be overly concerned but we want them to avoid mosquito bites", Lalonde said.

Military sources told the newspaper the accident occurred as the aircraft attempted to land on the USS Ronald Reagan. According to Sky News , 20 people have been rescued, while three are still missing and are feared dead .

Statewide, the number of infected people, mosquitoes and birds are less so far this year compared to the same time last year. No human cases have been reported in Northwest Ohio.

St. Louis encephalitis was a virus historically controlled by mosquito abatement districts in California before West Nile virus came on the scene about 15 years ago.

Use EPA registered insect repellent and follow the label directions.

Other tips include making sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens, repairing or replacing screens that are torn, and keeping doors and windows shut, especially at night.

The horse was not vaccinated against West Nile and was put down earlier this month.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water. Experts are urging that anyone outdoors for extended periods during those times wear long sleeves and long trousers, socks and shoes, as well as repellent.
