The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 31,919.17 points, traded at 31,834.45 points - up 63.56 points, or 0.20 per cent, from its previous close at 31,770.89 points.

Market breadth was in the favour of gainers, with about 2 stocks advancing to every 1 stock that declining.

The Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), which reclaimed the psychologically important 9,900-level intra-day by touching a high of 9,903.95 points, closed higher by 103.15 points or 1.05 per cent at 9,897.30 points.

Markets in Europe were lower Thursday as uncertainty surrounding internal USA policy continued to weigh on investor sentiment despite lessening tensions from North Korea. The Nifty PSU Bank index, which has lost almost 9 percent since India's central bank announced its decision to cut repo rate, gained as much as 1.08 percent.

Japan's Nikkei 225 edged down 0.14 percent, or 26.65 points, to close at 19,702.63, with autos and financial stocks ending the session lower. Auto and healthcare shares too registered losses. Other gainers were NTPC 3.94 per cent, Coal India 3.78 per cent, VEDL 2.56 per cent and Bharti Airtel 2.11 per cent. Around 3.5 million shares of the company changed hands in a block deal, Bloomberg reported.

GMR Infrastructure jumped 13.4% after India's Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a ruling of the Delhi high court that allowed Delhi International Airport Ltd, a unit of GMR Group, to put airport land to commercial use for non-aeronautical purposes.
