London Doesn't Want Border Checks With Ireland After Brexit

David Davis and Michel Barnier during Brexit negotiations

A spokesman for the government's Brexit Office said: "Both sides need to show flexibility and imagination when it comes to the border issue in Northern Ireland and that is exactly what our latest position paper will do".

Additionally, the proposal indicates that the government is seeking feedback from businesses on whether the proposals address their concerns and whether the government should propose additional alternatives or technological solutions.

The UK today (16 August) announced it wants to see "no hard border in the movement of goods" between the country and Ireland, setting out its position on one of the thorniest Brexit issues.

Apparently UK could ask Brussels to establish a "temporary customs union" after March 2019, but during this period it would expect to negotiate trade deals Labour's shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer said "the fantastical and contradictory proposals provide no guidance for negotiators or for businesses". But during this period it would also expect to be able to negotiate its own global trade deals, something which can not be done as an EU Customs Union member.

While British businesses welcome the proposal, the European Union warned that it would only negotiate trade deals after sufficient progress had been made on the UK's withdrawal from the bloc.

The single market ensures tariff-less trade in goods and services and is linked closely by the European Union with other rights, such as the right of European Union citizens to cross borders.

She also said Britain would consider replacing some European Union funding peace projects in Northern Ireland after it leaves the bloc in 2019 to prevent a resurgence of violence between Catholic Irish nationalists and pro-British Protestants.

London wants to leave the EU's customs union, which would allow it to negotiate its own trade deals with other countries.

Guy Lougher of Pinsent Masons, the law firm behind Out-Law.com said: "The paper indicates clearly that the government is very alive to the particular circumstances of Northern Ireland's interactions with Ireland, and is looking to preserve the status quo as far as possible".

London also said it wanted to uphold its freedom of movement agreement with Ireland, which predates the EU.

The customs union paper gels with the Irish paper in that both point to the need for a technology-lead solution to ensure trade and relations remain as fluid as possible.

Tuesday's paper claimed "there are two broad approaches the United Kingdom could adopt, "streamlining current arrangements or establishing a new customs partnership".

The EU's chief negotiation on Brexit, Michel Barnier, said on Twitter yesterday that "the quicker #UK & EU27 agree on citizens, settling accounts and #Ireland, the quicker we can discuss customs & future relationship".
