South Korean President 'Confident' Of No War With North

Donald Trump says if anything happens to Guam there will be

People march during a rally calling for peace on the peninsula in central Seoul, South Korea, on Aug 15, 2017.

When North Korea announced it had presented plans to Kim Jong Un on a possible strike at Guam, it included deescalatory language that seemed to invite the U.S. to tone down its military exercises.

In a meeting with Moon on Monday, Dunford reiterated the U.S.'s commitment to protect South Korea.

North Korea strongly condemns the exercises calling them preparations for "invasion". North Korea had threatened to launch missiles targeting waters near the US territory of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

"Since yesterday we are a bit more optimistic", Gabriel said. Trump then said America's military was "locked and loaded" if provoked. Therefore, should North Korea continue to take provocative actions, or even take an aggressive action against the United States, the USA may take appropriate steps...

In a press conference marking his first 100 days in office, Moon said he wanted "all South Koreans to believe with confidence that there will be no war", and also downplayed his United States counterpart Donald Trump's belligerent comments over Pyongyang, reports Efe news. "I say with confidence that there will never be another war on the Korean Peninsula". Moon wants to engage the North. All sides moved to tamp down tensions this week and signaled they may be willing to move toward negotiations.

During an inspection of the North Korean strategic rocket forces earlier this week, Mr Kim praised the military for drawing up a "close and careful plan" but said he would watch how Washington acts before deciding whether to go ahead with his Guam missile test plans.

Mr Trump wrote: "The alternative would have been both catastrophic and unacceptable!" Trump tweeted on Wednesday. Asked about potential unilateral USA action, he said "that's purely speculative and a decision to do that would be by the president".

Beijing renewed its protest after Seoul chose to install four Thaad launchers, which had been initially deferred due to an environmental review, in response to Pyongyang's latest test of an intercontinental ballistic missile last month.

Mr Trump's recent aggressive comments about deploying possible military options underscored his resolve to counter the threat from the North's nuclear weapons and missile programmes. "I do not necessarily believe that showed his determination to take military options", Moon said.

Moon said he believes the two Koreas must restart a dialogue, but it will take time.

Next week's start of annual U.S. It also conducted two underground nuclear tests in 2016.

North Korea threatened to attack the US in retaliation to the sanctions imposed by the United Nations over its missile tests, to which US President Donald Trump responded with an unusually fierce tone.
