Liberty Graduates to return diplomas protesting President Trump

Pastor A.R. Bernard at Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn N.Y

A group of graduates are now protesting University President Jerry Falweel Jr. after agreeing with Trump's remarks about the white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Va. that left one dead and many others injured.

"Finally a leader in WH".

"I'm sending my diploma back because the president of the United States is defending Nazis and white supremacists", Gaumer said.

Falwell, president of Liberty University, said Trump represents something the US has not had in national leadership "in a long time". "But he does not have a racist bone in his body". Falwell suggested that Trump laid blame to both sides in the Charlottesville clashes because he "has inside information".

During an interview on ABC's This Week, host Martha Raddatz asked Falwell, one of Trump's top surrogates, to explain the president's remarks. This is a school founded by a man who vehemently opposed desegregation, proclaimed that "gay folks would just as soon kill you as look at you", and believed 9/11 was caused in part by "the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians". I think he was talking about what he had seen, information that he had that I don't have'.

Trump "doesn't say what's politically correct, he says what's in his heart. and sometimes that gets him in trouble", Falwell said.

The hate groups - including the Klu Klux Klan, neo-Nazis and white supremacists - gathered in Charlottesville on August 12 they said to rally against a decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a city park.

Falwell invited Trump to give the first commencement speech of his term as president to Liberty University graduates.

Trump denounced the most extreme factions of the rally crowd but insisted there was "very fine people" among the haters who, according to Trump, just wanted to preserve a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. "That's what I thought was bold". "There's such a strong affiliation now between Liberty University and President Trump that you know that reflects badly on all alumni".

He also noted that as part of his commentary on the Charlottesville violence, Trump had labeled as "evil" white supremacists, neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members.

Johnson Hatlem said returning diplomas is an important symbolic statement. "But I do plan to send back my diploma to Liberty".
