Nationwide bank strike paralyses banking operation in Meghalaya

Bank unions to go on strike on Tuesday

Banking services in the city was hit today as almost 200 employees including officers of various banks across the city joined together in the nationwide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Union (UFBU). Although private sector banks like HDFC, ICICI, Axis etc are scheduled to function normally, some delay in cheque clearances can be expected. Venkatchalam said the government should abolish the Banks Board Bureau and ensure stringent measures to recover bad loans and accountability of top executives.

Although banks have not made any formal announcement pertaining to the strike, many have informed customers that their branches and offices may remain closed tomorrow. The angry bank employees raised slogans denouncing the privation of public sector banks as well as merging of some banks with the SBI.

Around 10 lakh bankers will go on strike tomorrow as talks between the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) on one side and Indian Banks' Association, Chief Labour Commissioner and the Department of Financial Services (DFS) failed on Friday.

"The strike is 100 per cent successful".
