ACLU files second suit, Mattis calls for study — Transgender military ban

Still room for diplomatic solution with North Korea: Mattis

The original ban on transgender troops was lifted a year ago under former President Barack Obama but Trump reinstated it Friday, citing cost and disruption.

Mattis and the Department of Homeland Security must provide their recommendations on how to implement the transgender ban by February 21, 2018. But Mattis' statement was exactly in line with each step of Trump's directive, which granted the defense secretary time to "determine how to address transgender individuals now serving" in the military.

This past June, Mattis extended that study through January 2018.

The Department of Defense is also directed to stop all gender-related surgeries with the exception of those individuals whose procedures are already underway - to protect the health of the individual.

After President Trump tweeted in late July that the military would ban transgender people from service, the Pentagon waited for official word from the President on how to implement the request, since direct orders generally don't come by way of social media.

How has the Pentagon responded?

On Aug. 29, Mattis disclosed that transgender troops would continue serving in the USA military pending the results of a study on their "deployability".

"Once the panel reports its recommendations and following my consultation with the secretary of Homeland Security, I will provide my advice to the president concerning implementation of his policy direction", Mattis said in the statement.

He said the panel will be made up of people with "mature experience, most notably in combat and deployed operations, and seasoned judgment to this task".

"The panel will assemble and thoroughly analyse all pertinent data, quantifiable and non-quantifiable", Mattis said.

"We continue to work together, and the minister and I share responsibility to provide for the protection of our nation our populations and our interests, which is what we are here to discuss today", he explained. In the letter released Tuesday, they said enforcing the ban could mean discharging active duty soldiers, sailors, Marines and Air Force members who are serving honorably. That means it is possible that the openly transgender persons already enlisted will not be ejected.

More than ever, we need reporters to fact check these stories and not simply repeat false information that is being used to set up an attempted cover for one of the most shocking acts of official discrimination the transgender community has ever experienced.

In a story August 28 about legal challenges to President Donald Trump's ban on transgender people joining the military, The Associated Press erroneously described the Washington-state based Gender Justice League.

What do previous studies say about transgender service members?

"The government will have its hands full defending the notion that this is bad for cohesion", Yale military law professor Eugene Fidell said, particularly because it reversed a policy based on long-term study.
