The Tom Herman era is off to a rocky start

Texas nearly imploded in the first half against Maryland, and no one could believe it

Texas had its same problems: It gave up a special-teams touchdown, it missed field goals, and its defense was battered and gave up big plays.

The Tom Herman Era of Texas Football started in stunning, shocking, disappointing, and frustrating fashion. The Longhorns had five penalties in the first two quarters - three which directly stopped drives - and Buechele was sacked three times.

Any thought of a resurgence at Texas was dispelled by the Longhorns' uneven performance on Saturday against a Maryland team that was picked to finish fifth in the Big 10's Eastern Division. Texas then charged back, setting up a wild second half.

It began with a Maryland offense that finally looked multidimensional against a program stocked with elite athletes, . After a slow start - nine yards on four rushes and an interception on Maryland's first two drives - Pigrome went to work.

However, there were negatives, as Maryland saw quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome and cornerback Antwaine Richardson leave the game due to injury.

Then on third-and-19, quarterback Kasim Hill found D.J. Moore to the Texas 7.

Hill (3 for 3 passing for 44 yards) and Moore (seven catches, 133 yards) were not the only clutch contributors late.

Maryland's run defense is stout but can it survive the injuries it suffered?

But backed by a sound defensive effort that featured very few missed tackles and played up to Durkin's reputation as a strict disciplinarian, Pigrome also settled in. A subsequent touchdown by sophomore tailback Jake Funk ended it. At this point, it was 14-7 Terps in the first quarter.

For much of the next hour the sun-baked crowd shrieked after a string of freakish plays. But, Poona Ford changed momentum by blocking a field goal and Holton Hill returned the FG for a touchdown. The Longhorns scored just 13 offensive points. However, their time in the Top 25 will be short lived because Texas was on the wrong end of a 51-41 final score.

Their most egregious error was a blocked field goal of their own returned 71 yards for a touchdown by Maryland's Antoine Brooks early in the second quarter. He got 4 yards on a third-and-3 play in the third quarter.

Maryland football went on to score two more touchdowns on the ground to the Texas Longhorns one, getting the victory.

23 Texas in a season-opening game in Austin on Saturday, 51-41. Leading up to the season opener, Herman was cautious with regard to the depth concerns he has on the roster and his offensive abilities ready to take flight this season.

The Longhorns responded with an 11-play drive, but kicker Joshua Rowland couldn't convert a 42-yard field goal attempt.

Iraqi Forces, Hashd Shaabi Liberate Tal Afar Center, Citadel from ISIL Terrorists
The International Organization for Migration said "thousands of civilians" had fled Tal Afar since the offensive began. Rasool says about 10,000 civilians remain inside the city but that authorities have secured safe corridors for them.
