Maryland Drivers Expected To Travel Labor Day Weekend Despite Rising Gas Prices

Tom Thumb at FM 3040 and Valley Pkwy was out of unleaded gasoline Wednesday afternoon

While some are not happy and fear the worst, others are thinking the opposite and say the rise in gas prices following Hurricane Harvey should not be unexpected.

Gas prices are now $2.38 for unleaded regular in Tampa Bay, $2.41 in Florida, and $2.45 nationally.

Among those states, the highest 24-hour rise on average was in South Carolina, AAA reported. Gas prices have gone up about 12 cents in the city within the past week, pumping a little more money out of Joel's pocketbook.

According to AAA, as of Friday the average price for gas in Alabama sits was sitting at $2.30. "That's based on the reports that we're getting about the status of the refineries".

"Last week it was $2.19, a couple of weeks ago it was just $1.99", says Tillis.

"Over the next week, we could see another 10- to 15-cent increase at the pump".

Trump, in Missouri, lays groundwork for tax overhaul; offers few details
And that really means buying product ideally made in this country, but that means they'll go out, and they'll spend their money. All I want to do is MAGA (Make America Great Again), Trump added with the slogan of his presidential campaign.

"This will likely subside later in September following the (Labor Day) holiday demand", Powell said. "The high inventory levels have the potential to offset gas price surges similar to what we have seen with past hurricanes".

Harvey's impact on gasoline prices was heightened because Houston "is the epicenter of the USA refinery community", according to Mac. "We're also see prices go up in Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky because they produce so much gas for such a big part of the country". It's among several southern states that are heavily reliant on the Colonial Pipeline for deliveries of gasoline.

The lowest Florida prices are in Tampa, with an average gallon of $2.46.

Historically, Mac said gas prices decrease on Labor Day weekend.

While Labor Day weekend signifies a long weekend for many, it also means drivers in Columbia and Greene counties will be paying more at the pump.

That's when, they say, we typically switch from the summer blend to winter blend fuels.
