North Korea nuclear test provocative - Putin

Trump weighs pulling out of free trade deal with South Korea

THAAD is created to intercept ballistic missiles.

THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) is easily integrated into the missile defense systems of greater range and power, and all this is then fitting into the United States integrated missile defense system, Ryabkov explained.

Mattis and Onodera both condemned the test as a destabilizing provocation that threatens both regional and global security, White said in a statement summarizing the call. The four remaining launchers have been on standby at an unidentified US base in South Korea, pending the alliance's decision.

The US Forces Korea will reportedly position the launchers at a new base in Seongju, some 300 kilometres south of Seoul, on Thursday. "But as I said, we have many options to do so".

Cancer-killing drug approved, but will you be able to afford it?
Cancer cells are seen on a large screen connected to a microscope at the CeBit computer fair in Hanover, Germany, March, 6, 2012. The treatment, called Kymriah , aims to give some patients a second chance after first-line drugs have failed.

Hours earlier, the South's Defense Minister Song Young-moo had phone talks with his American counterpart James Mattis. China has opposed deployment of THAAD, saying its powerful radar can probe deep into its territory, undermining its security.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Wednesday that the North Korean nuclear crisis can not be resolved by sanctions alone, and urged the worldwide community not to push Pyongyang into a corner.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says supporting a Russian-Chinese road map would help resolve the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula.

But Russia and China are opposed to the show of strength by the US and South Korea. The nation's state newspaper Rodong Sinmun published images on Sunday of Kim allegedly inspecting a nuclear warhead and claimed the bomb tested was a hydrogen fusion weapon-if so, a significant improvement in the nation's nuclear program. He told reporters before his departure from Japan that "We must make North Korea understand there is no bright future for the country if it pursues the current path".
