Local PG&E workers fly to Florida to help after Hurricane Irma strikes

Many residents across South Florida have begun feeling Hurricane Irma's effect, Saturday morning, as thousands of power outages were reported. "We work 24/7 to restore power", an FPL spokesman said.

FPL said Sunday that it had gone ahead with a partial shutdown of one of its nuclear power plants, but that the other continued to be fully operational and remained safe.

FPL is the biggest power company in Florida serving nearly half of the state's 20.6 million residents.

As of 10 p.m., there were 118,608 outages in Miami-Dade, 64,270 in Broward, and 10,879 in Palm Beach County.

"Unfortunately, we're not immune to Irma's wrath", said FPL vice president and chief communications officer Rob Gould.

A series of explosions and meltdowns occurred at the Fukushima nuclear plant after a massive natural disaster unleashed a powerful tsunami that shut the facility's cooling systems and led to meltdowns.

Duke Energy Corp., the state's second-largest utility, has estimated it could see more than 1 million outages because of Irma. That is a decrease from the Category 5 designation Irma previously held. Emera's Tampa Electric utility said the storm could affect up to 500,000 of the 730,000 homes and businesses it serves. So far, that's about 1,000 more crew assembled for Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

FPL says it has invested $3 billion to protect its electricity grid since 2005, when the last major hurricane damaged power facilities in Florida.

FPL also said it will proactively shut down certain substations before they flood, so they can turn them back online more quickly.

FPL did announce Friday that it plans to shut down its two nuclear power plants - Turkey Point in Homestead and St. Lucie Nuclear Plant near Fort Pierce - 24 hours before hurricane-force winds hit the area and throughout the storm.

After waiting in line for hours, man offers last generator to stranger
Store managers said they're unsure if they'll receive another shipment of generators since each store in the state needs more. Brekke said her father is on oxygen, and that she was concerned that Hurricane Irma could knock out power in her home.
