Forecasters studying path of Hurricane Jose

Caicos after Irma

Satellite images of Jose resembled an "amorphous blob" looping in small counterclockwise motions in the Atlantic, where it would remain for the next three days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Deputy Director at The Bahamas Department of Meteorology Jeffery Simmons speaking with The Bahama Journal said it too early to predict the storm's exact path but The Bahamas should be in the clear.

Despite local panic, it spared Barbuda, St. Martin and Anguilla, all of which had been ravaged by Hurricane Irma.

A complicated high-altitude environment over the Atlantic Ocean is what is causing Jose to wobble around the Atlantic.

Current long-term forecast models for Jose are all over the map next week.

The forecast for Tuesday morning shows high pressure (black circle) will move offshore and prevent Jose from escaping out to sea. The strength and location of this ridge will determine how far Jose moves westward before eventually turning north and then east again.

Jose won't lose much intensity during this loop to nowhere, as the storm will have plenty of warm water for fuel. Forecast models are having a hard time figuring out what the state of the atmosphere will be like beyond five days.

As of 11:00 a.m. this morning, the National Hurricane Center placed Jose at 305 miles northeast of the Turks and Caicos Islands, moving northward at 9 mph.

Jose will meander north of the Caribbean region this week and pose no danger to land for most of the workweek.

That said, those of us along the East Coast will need to keep an eye on Jose. Whether it impacts our forecast is still uncertain.

Where does Jose end up? Irma, now a tropical depression, was expected to bring clouds to the East Coast by late this week.
