Focus turns to FA after Mark Sampson's sacking raises questions of competence

England managers whose reigns were dogged by controversy

The FA's former director of football development, Sir Trevor Brooking, has said that he was unaware of any past misdemeanours before Mark Sampson was given the England Women job in 2013.

The Football Association was warned about employing England women's manager Mark Sampson before he got the job, it has been claimed.

The FA said the report "revealed clear evidence of inappropriate and unacceptable behavior by a coach".

British broadcaster BBC reported on Wednesday that Sampson, who led England to the semifinals of Euro 2017, will depart over the latest allegations.

A 2015 FA assessment found Sampson, who was appointed England boss in December 2013, did not pose a risk.

Martin Glenn did not take up the role of chief executive until March 2015, so can not be held responsible for the decision to appoint Sampson, but he chose not to ask for details of the safeguarding investigation until last week and has backed the Welshman in the bitter dispute with Aluko, including agreeing to pay her £80,000 to settle the case earlier this year.

That investigation cleared him from a safeguarding point of view and he was allowed to continue his preparations for the 2015 Women's World Cup, where England finished third.

Sampson was sacked on Wednesday after evidence of "inappropriate and unacceptable" behaviour from his time as Bristol Academy boss came to light.

"I don't know too much about it and I'm sure we'll find out the full story in time to come".

Despite Sampson being cleared in 2015, FA CEO Martin Glenn, reviewed the report in detail and he decided, along with the FA board, that Sampson had "overstepped the professional boundaries between player and coach".

"WiF understands that questions over Sampson's suitability for the role were flagged to the FA as early as 2013 during the recruitment process", the statement reads.

Sampson was cleared after being accused of "bullying and discrimination" by former worldwide forward Eniola Aluko who revealed that when she told Sampson she had family from Nigeria coming to watch a game, he replied: "Make sure they don't bring Ebola with them". He asked me if I had anyone who would be there and I said I had family coming over from Nigeria. We thought the conduct issues raised in the report was the problem.

The details of Sampson's improper behaviour have not been made clear but they are understood to involve a relationship with a player, although there is no suggestion of any criminal wrongdoing.

The FA clarified that the claims involved more than one player.

Glenn and fellow under-fire chairman Greg Clarke will have to answer questions at a parliamentary inquiry next month.

Collins, chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, last night said: "If it transpires that FA executives had warnings and advice that they didn't follow up, then their positions become untenable". That was originally meant to investigate the handling of Aluko's racism complaint, but will now look for answers on the whole Sampson affair. "I think he recognizes it needed to be investigated and didn't dispute that".
