Former Thai premier Yingluck Shinawatra sentenced to jail in absentia

Thai court sentences ex-PM Yingluck in absentia to 5 years in jail

Former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was sentenced to five years in prison.

Shinawatra, the first female prime minister of the country, fled Thailand last month after being convicted in a rice subsidy scheme, which cost the country billions of dollars.

Ms Yingluck entered politics only after his sentence and was seen by critics as a proxy for her ousted brother.

Three police officers allegedly helped Yingluck flee, and the military relaxed its close monitoring of the controversial figure days before the August 25 verdict was due.

The younger sister of exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra did not attend Wednesday's court verdict.

Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay in Bangkok said that it took the nine Supreme Court judges four hours to read the verdict.

Federal Bureau of Investigation allegedly wiretapped Paul Manafort before, after election
The monitoring stretched into 2017 following the renewal of the FISA warrant after the first one was discontinued a year ago . Lindsey Graham said that if true, Trump's wiretapping claims would be the "biggest political scandal since Watergate".

Yingluck's government was overthrown in a military coup in 2014.

It was further added, "Which is a manner of seeking unlawful gains".

The Supreme Court said Yingluck Shinawatra was knowing of the falsified rice deals but did nothing to stop it. "Therefore, the action of the accused is considered negligence of duty", it said.

- Sentences her to five years in jail.

On the eve of the verdict junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha declared his "spies" had informed him of Yingluck's whereabouts, but said he would not reveal her location until after the judgement was delivered. There lives her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, who also headed the government of Thailand, and then fled overseas because of allegations of abuse of power.
