Australia NRL final: Macklemore derides 'gay anthem' ban calls

US music artist Macklemore caught in NRL Grand Final same-sex marriage storm

American rapper Macklemore vowed on Thursday to "go harder" when he plays his hit gay anthem at Australia's rugby league grand final, despite protests from "angry old white dudes".

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, a gay marriage opponent, tweeted that rugby fans should not be subjected to a politicized event that is the Australian equivalent of the NFL Superbowl.

Speaking on an ABC breakfast news program, Brandis proved he was well versed on Macklemore's back catalog.

"Imma go harder, Imma love", Macklemore responded. "I think there is a petition today to ban me from playing", he told U.S. radio.

"So I'm getting a lot of tweets from angry old white men in Australia who I think there was a petition today to ban me from playing it".

"Macklemore was chosen as the grand final act because he is now one of the top acts in the world", the organisation said in a statement.

Same-sex marriage is a hotly contested topic in Australia right now, with the postal vote currently underway.

Julianna Margulies (" The Good Wife ") parlayed her 2011 SAG win for Drama Actress into an Emmy later that year. Brown is the victor of Emmy Award for best actor in a drama series for his role in " This Is Us ".

"Naturally he will be performing his number one hits on Sunday, the fans would not expect anything less".

Tony Abbott even took to his Twitter page to throw his support behind a movement to stop Macklemore performing his tribute to the LGBTQI+ community (and equal opportunity in general).

"I can't think of a better song for all the hundreds of thousands of people to listen to on Saturday", she continues, adding, "This is what we need right now".

"We have seen political correctness run riot on a whole host of issues, but this is the first time that the Australian public have been asked to cast their verdict on all of these developments", he said.

The Coalition for Marriage, the leading No campaign group, accused the NRL of force-feeding fans LGBTIQ messages and making the grand final a "PC lecture theatre".

Macklemore is flying to Australia for a one-off performance at Sunday's National Rugby League (NRL) grand final. However, Australian conservatives, led by Abbott, are arguing that Macklemore is injecting politics into sports, where they don't belong.
