World Health Organization swaps out H3N2, B strains in Southern Hemisphere flu vaccine

Scientists are concerned the flu vaccination has less than a 40 per cent effectiveness rate

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Influenza is a serious and life threatening disease. Like last season, the nasal mist vaccine is not available.

No child is vaccinated with a completed consent form.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, left, receives a flu vaccination from Sharon Walsh-Bonadies, RN., right, during a news conference recommending everyone age six months an older be vaccinated against influenza each year, Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017 in Washington.

Data collection started two weeks before the flu jab, with a pre-vaccination blood test to check antibody levels and standardised diaries detailing food and drink intake, physical activity, positive affect, negative affect, stress, and sleep for each participant. When the researchers looked at influences on the day of vaccination, they found an even greater effect on how well it worked, accounting for between 8 and 14 percent of the variability in antibody levels.

For the 2017-2018 season, vaccine manufacturers have estimated that up to 166 million doses of injectable influenza vaccine will be available in the U.S. More than 73 million doses of flu vaccine have already been delivered. Vaccination can reduce flu illnesses for those who do get sick, which can mean less time lost at work or in school.

On Thursday, the CDC also launched its seasonal flu vaccine campaign.

That's why the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging everyone 6 months and older to get a flu shot. This includes older adults, younger children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions, smokers and people who live in nursing homes. You can find more guidelines for vaccinations and a full clinic schedule at this link. During the 2016-2017 season, the hospitalization rate was almost double that of the 2015-2016 season and higher across all age groups (cumulative rate for all ages of 62.6/100,000) than the previous eight seasons, with the exception of the 2014-2015 season. "Today, I am leading by example and getting vaccinated against flu". During flu season, viruses circulate at higher levels in the population.

"It will be severe and there will always be a flu season".

The researchers say that the approach of focusing on individual viral strains is not uncommon, but recommend that future research is best conducted in the context of a vaccination with more novel viral strains to further confirm the positive mood effect on vaccination. "Influenza is an unpredictable infectious disease".

According to officials, the vaccine is safe and does not cause the flu although some people may have mild soreness and redness near the site of the shot and a low fever or slight headache.

The World Health Organisation's advisory panel has concluded its bi-annual meeting on the Southern Hemisphere flu vaccine.
