Russian firm spent $372k on Twitter ads

Not happy Mark Warner the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee called the company's statements'deeply disappointing

In addition, Twitter says that post-Soviet states and Russian Federation have always been responsible for the majority of spammy and automated content on its platform. Twitter suspended the accounts that violated the company's terms of use.

Following its meeting with members of the Senate and House's respective intelligence committees, Twitter has issued new details on the information it is providing to aid the congressional investigations into Russia's potential interference in the 2016 USA election. Those groups had 22 corresponding Twitter accounts, while 179 more accounts were linked to them.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg rejected Trump's tirade, adding that he regretted his initial dismissal of how social media platforms such as Facebook were used as tools of misinformation and fake news.

Twitter said Thursday it disabled 22 accounts after reviewing information from Facebook Inc. showing connections to 450 bogus accounts on that company's social network.

RT's Twitter accounts "promoted 1,823 Tweets that definitely or potentially targeted the U.S. market", Twitter said in a blog post.

Mark Warner, D-Va., criticized Twitter's information as merely a follow-up to what Facebook had already disclosed. The statement said RT, which was named in January in a USA intelligence report on election interference, spent at least $2,74,100 in 2016 for 1,823 tweet ads or "promotions" that "definitely or potentially targeted the U.S. market". It says it supports making political advertising more transparent to our users and the public. Mark Warner, called the meeting "inadequate on nearly every level".

Russians targeted race and other divisive issues with Facebook political ads

When a day ago Twitter rolled out the 280 character tweets on a test basis to a set of users, many wondered whether Donald trump, who has used Twitter to slam his critics and even threaten other countries with nuclear war, would also be allowed to make longer tweets.

Fake accounts and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of social media ads have been linked to a wider effort among the Russian government to sow divisions among Americans, CNN reported.

Twitter said in its report that it will implement new measures to police "spammy or suspicious activity".

"Twitter deeply respects the integrity of the election process, which is a cornerstone for all democracies".

House Intelligence Committee Representatives Mike Conaway and Adam Schiff leading the Russia probe announced on Wednesday that they had called for representatives of the firms themselves to testify on the issue of Russian manipulation.
