Trump blasts media coverage of Puerto Rico

Trump Attacks San Juan Mayor Who Criticized Hurricane Response

Ten days after Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, the USA territory's governor approved a moratorium on rent payments for those living in public housing as residents struggle to recover from the devastating storm. I am begging. Begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying.

Trump himself brought it back into the news Saturday, with Twitter attacks on how the "Fake News Networks are working overtime in Puerto Rico doing their best to take the spirit away from our soldiers" and first responders. At least 16 people on the island were killed, and there was widespread damage to homes, roads and infrastructure.

Trump insisted Friday that his administration was doing an "incredible job" with relief efforts. President Trump complaining about San Juan's Mayor, Carmen Yulin Cruz tweeting "Such poor leadership ability by the mayor and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help".

Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez on Friday broke down in tears while describing the dire situation in Puerto Rico and sharply criticized President Donald Trump for his administration's response so far to the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

"Maybe from where she's standing it's a good news story".

But he points out that Elaine Duke is temporarily in the job, "and she's working very hard". "We're distributing fuel, food and water. And I can not fathom the thought that the greatest nation in the world can not figure out logistics for a small island of 100 miles by 35 miles long", Cruz said Friday.

On Saturday, she responded to Trump's tweeted comments, saying, "It's not about politics, it's not about petty comments, it's about moving forward, putting boots on the ground and saving lives".

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello has called the destruction to the island unprecedented, though the Republican has praised the USA government's relief efforts.

On Friday, Carmen Yulin Cruz told a news conference she was "done being politically correct" because her people were dying in the aftermath of Maria, the most powerful storm to hit Puerto Rico in almost 90 years. "It is unfortunate that the San Juan mayor wants to sort of go against the grain".

Bengal child rights panel moves SC against moves to deport Rohingyas
The commission had justified its "intervention" as appropriate, considering that it involved a human rights problem. But none of them followed the procedure. "No Rohingya has got asylum in India nor anyone has applied for it.

Rossello has been less critical of the federal effort than Cruz.

But Trump's comments drew swift condemnation elsewhere, particularly from U.S. Democrats.

Later in the day, Trump tempered his tweeted barbs.

Yulín Cruz maintained the focus should be foremost on saving the people of Puerto Rico.

Thousands more Puerto Ricans have received water and rationed food as an aid bottleneck has begun to ease. "Someone will say, 'Right this way, sir.' They'll clear a path", Miranda tweeted. Francisco Corrada, manager of freight services at Crowley Maritime Corporation at the port, said things are picking up but if businesses are not reopened they can't send truckers to pick up goods.

Trump writes on Twitter: "The fact is that Puerto Rico has been destroyed by two hurricanes".

Cruz, in response, said later Saturday morning that she'll "continue to do whatever I have to do" to get federal hurricane assistance.

White House: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday that the federal government was acting quickly to meet Puerto Rico's cash shortage.

The praise for Puerto Rico's governor continued a theme from Saturday when the president praised the work of Gov. Ricardo Rosselló shortly after criticizing the mayor of the island's capital, San Juan.
