U.S. bombers' nighttime flight delivers message to N. Korea

The South Korean military said this was part of a regular exercise to bolster military defences and also to display the alliance between the United States and South Korea

The B-1B Lancers, which flew from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, were joined by South Korean fighter jets after entering the Korean Air Defense Identification Zone about 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, the South Korean military said.

South Korea said Tuesday it was maintaining full military readiness following intense speculation of a possible ballistic missile test by the North as it marks a key anniversary.

North Korea has launched two missiles over Japan and conducted its sixth and biggest nuclear test in recent weeks in defiance of U.N. sanctions as it races towards its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the United States.

"Through the practice this time, South Korean and USA air forces showed off the allies' resolve for strong retaliation against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats", it added.

"If the North Koreans in fact accessed the US/South Korean defense plans, this is a treasure trove of information and presents a real danger", said CNN military analyst and retired Lt. Col. Rick Francona.

North Korean hackers allegedly stole classified military documents from a South Korean Defense Ministry database in September 2016, according to Rhee Cheol-hee, a member of South Korea's National Assembly, CNN reported Wednesday. Lee, who didn't specify his sources, said the plans allegedly stolen by the North include operations for tracking the movement of the North's leadership, isolating their hideouts, executing air assaults and follow-up actions for securing and eliminating targets, which would obviously include North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The four aircraft then flew across the peninsula and staged another round of a firing exercise over the Yellow Sea before the two B-IBs returned home, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

"The briefing and discussion focused on a range of options to respond to any form of North Korean aggression or, if necessary to prevent North Korea from threatening the United States and its allies with nuclear weapons", it said without elaborating.

The Defense Ministry after an investigation said in May that North Korea was likely behind the hacking of the Defense Integrated Data Center in September past year, but had refused to confirm media speculation that the decapitation strike plan was compromised.

North Korea is famous for its outlandish threats of waging war and using nuclear weapons against the United States and its allies. China's influential Global Times tabloid expressed alarm at how far the rhetoric on both sides had gone and how it had increased the risk of a "fatal misjudgment".

"In this region, we now have a joint task group which is traveling through. the region", she said. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed hope that the relevant countries "will not engage in words or deeds that provoke one another or raise tensions", while a Kremlin spokesperson stressed that [Moscow] has "demanded that the countries involved [in the North Korean nuclear issue] exercise restraint and avoid measures that exacerbate the situation". "War would be a nightmare for the Korean Peninsula and surrounding regions".
