For the Janata Dal United that had dumped Lalu Yadav and resurrected its alliance with the BJP in July, PM Modi's visit was an occasion to demonstrate that Chief Minister Kumar's swapping of old allies - Lalu Yadav and the Congress - had earned Bihar the centre's goodwill that would benefit the state too.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reached the capital of Bihar for a one-day visit to attend the centenary year of Patna University. "I bow to this land of Bihar", said the Prime Minister as he took the stage with Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar. "The Centre attaches topmost importance to the development of eastern India", Modi added.

"The commitment of Nitish Kumar towards the progress of Bihar is commendable". Later, speaking at the centenary celebrations of Patna University, the prime minister showered praise on the chief minister.

The Diwali gift came when Modi laid the foundation stone for four national highway projects worth Rs 3031 crore and as many sewage treatment plants (STPs) and other related works worth Rs 738.04 crore.

While addressing the event, Nitish Kumar demanded that the Patna University should be given the status of a Central University.

The Prime Minister said that he had observed, that across States, the top levels of the civil services have people who have studied in Patna University. He announced that top 10 private and top 10 public universities will be given Rs.10,000 crore in the next five years. The prime minister will also be accompanied by Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari for the ceremony.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said it was a "blot" that Indian universities do not figure among the top 500 of the world and added that the government has chose to give autonomy and Rs 10,000 crore to top 10 public and 10 private universities over the next five years to make them world-class. "I assure you that the central government will walk with you shoulder to shoulder to fulfil dreams of people of Bihar and take this journey of development to new heights", he said.

PM Narendra Modi also spoke about the current and former education system of India. "This university has nurtured students who have contributed greatly to the nation", he added.
