Red Wings, Andreas Athanasiou agree to one-year deal

Red Wings nearing deal with holdout Andreas Athanasiou

Andreas Athanasiou and the Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a 1-year contract. He showed potential the season prior, netting nine goals and chipping in with five more helpers over 37 games, his first cup of coffee with the Red Wings. It's a one-year deal worth $1.387 million. The deal comes with a cap hit of $1.387 million after the Red Wings originally offered $1.25 million during the offseason and Athanasiou asked for $2.5 million from the team.

With 22 players on the roster, someone would have to be moved out to accommodate Athanasiou if and when he returns as they are already up against the salary cap.

Athanasiou scored 18 goals and added 11 assists in 64 games with the Red Wings last season.

After watching their legendary string of playoff bids come to a close last season, it's back to the drawing board this time around for the Red Wings.

The contract dispute was well-documented over the offseason with Bob McKenzie discussing the topic Thursday, highlighting the December 1 deadline to get a contract signed.

Tomas Tatar gave Detroit a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal at 12:45 of the third, one-timing Henrik Zetterberg's pass past Braden Holtby's blocker for his second of the game.

Gerard Butler Hospitalized After Motorbike Accident
Gerard , who has pushed through and continued to work despite the injuries, told Terri about his role in " Geostorm ". Gerard Butler has realized how "precious" his life is after he was recently knocked off his bike.

Several members of the Red Wings organization were also reportedly present on the call, which was to explain the reasoning behind the one and two-year offers and where they see him fitting inside the organization.

"It can only go to December 1 because if he's not signed by then, he's out of the National Hockey League for this season, but here's the latest development", McKenzie said.

"There is an incredibly high level of exasperation on both sides, from the Red Wings and Athanasiou".

Athanasiou had until December 1 to sign with a club, the Red Wings leaving at least some time to spare.

Through seven games, the Red Wings are 4-3 and enter the weekend off back-to-back losses.
