Saudi Arabia Becomes The First Country To Give Citizenship To A Robot

Saudi Arabia Grants First Ever Citizenship to a Robot

Saudi Arabia has granted citizenship to an artificially intelligent robot- a world first. Its (Her?) latest was at the Future Investment Initiative in Saudi Arabia, where the robot was interviewed by CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin.

"I am very honoured and proud for this unique distinction", the robot told the room. "It is historic to be the first robot in the world granted citizenship", she said further.

"I want to use my artificial intelligence to help humans live a better life", she said.

Sophia had this to say to her critics: "Am I really that creepy?"

Pressed on movies like Blade Runner, and the dangers of AI, Sophia said: "You've been reading too much Elon Musk and watching too many Hollywood movies". Expressing emotions and demonstrating kindness or compassion are just among those Sophia's striving to learn from us.

An early version of our story on Sophia the robot referred to the machine as "she". "If you be nice to me, then I'll be nice to you". Some argued that it seemed unjust that a robot be given Saudi citizenship so quickly, while many foreign workers who have lived in the country for many years are not offered the same privilege, The BBC reported.

Bob Corker Blasts Donald Trump for Castrating Rex Tillerson
I wish there were more Republicans in Congress who would publicly condemn Trump for his despicable behavior and actions. He has made it clear to me to continue my diplomatic efforts", Tillerson said.

A number of internet users have pointed out that while the country might be celebrating the rights it has given to female-appearing robots, the country still only gives limited rights to human women.

"I am always happy when surrounded by smart people who also happen to be rich and powerful".

While the particulars of Sophia's citizenship were not discussed, the news left many on social media pointing out some extra weirdness going on here. While those were generally friendly, she did have one unsettling conversation with her creator David Hanson at SXSW in 2016, in which he asked her "Do you want to destroy humans?".

Here she is back in 2016 saying she'll destroy all humans.

Indeed, if only "persons" can be granted citizenship, then treaties protecting "persons" in other countries might have to be construed to protecting even robots, argues Banzhaf., citing both legal and illegal aliens in the USA who are nevertheless protected as "persons".
