New Book Claims Bushes Had Harsh Words For Trump

Both Bush presidents bash 'blowhard' Donald Trump as unfit for the presidency

"I don't know much about him, but I know he's a blowhard", said Bush, now 93.

His son, George W. Bush, who assumed the presidency just over a decade after his father, had similar feelings about Trump.

George W. Bush, who told CNN he believes there is a "battle over the soul" of the GOP, told the author, "you know, I fear that I will be the last Republican president". He reportedly described Donald Trump's inauguration speech in March as "some weird s**t".

Bush Sr., who voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, thought Trump seemed to have "a certain ego" but initially had hopes that he could unite the country if he possessed a sense of "humility".

"The Last Republicans" is set to be released on November 14.

The book's title, Mr Updegrove told CNN, came from a remark made by George W Bush during the presidential election. I always liked him, but I didn't like him so much for a while because I thought he hurt George.

"At the time, I think he was concerned that Hillary Clinton would win", Updegrove, the author of several books on the presidency, said in an interview.

While there have been small political differences between former and current occupiers of the White House, it is exceptionally rare for a former president to ding a sitting president so forcefully.

"If you look at the Bush family, it makes ideal sense".

Bush and George H.W. Bush speak to the crowd before game five of the 2017 World Series between the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Minute Maid Park on October 29, 2017 in Houston, Texas. "Donald Trump is everything that the Bush family is not", Updegrove told CNN.

"I voted "None of the Above" for president, and Republican down ballot in 2016", he told CNN. "Interesting, won't last" was the reaction that George W. Bush had in those days, Mr Updegrove writes.

In this endearing, illuminating work, presidential historian Mark K. Updegrove tracks the two Bush presidents from their formative years through their post-presidencies and the failed presidential candidacy of Jeb Bush, derailing the Bush presidential dynasty.

The younger Bush resented the implication that anyone was steering him.

Indeed, at one point during the 2016 presidential campaign, the younger Mr.

But he insisted Cheney served him well and said the vice president's sometimes dark reputation was inevitable.
