Kelsey Cooper, Paul's Kentucky-based communications director, said in a statement Saturday that the senator "was blindsided and the victim of an assault".

A man was arrested and charged with assaulting and injuring Rand Paul, the Republican senator from Kentucky, at his home on Friday afternoon.

State troopers arrived at 3:21 p.m. Friday at the Republican senator's home.

Rene Albert Boucher, 59, was captured and accused of one include of attack the fourth degree. The perpetrator, reportedly Paul's neighbor and a registered Democrat, has been arrested.

The Republican "was blindsided and the victim of an assault" on Friday, a spokeswoman for him was quoted by USA media as saying. Bousher was charged with assault causing a minor injury and taken to the Warren County Detention Center.

Paul has been Kentucky's junior senator since 2011.

The Warren County, Kentucky Jail said Boucher remained behind bars on Saturday after not immediately posting a $5,000 bond, according to online records.
