Apple's iPhone 'i' glitch is driving texters insane

Weird iOS Bug Replaces "I" With "A[?]" in Text Messages

The Guardian reports that the issue stems from the iPhone's predicative-text function on their keyboards with the function reading the letter "i" and auto-correcting it to the question mark in the box. A bug in the latest version of iOS is preventing iPhone users from typing the letter "I"-the 10th most common word in the English language".

The issue appears to impact iPhone users on its most recent mobile software, iOS 11.1.

Some users are reporting that the temporary workaround isn't working, while others are noticing the fix.

Apple recommends in a new support page that users set up a Text Replacement for the letter "i".

To create a new text replacement, go to Settings General Keyboard Text Replacement. From there, type an upper-case "I" for Phrase, and the for Shortcut, type a lower-case "i". It's not just newly purchased phones that are affected, but iOS 11 users from iPhone 6 and up are also seeing the glitch.

UEFA Champions League Report: Napoli v Manchester City, 01 November 2017
City won the reverse fixture 2-1 at the Etihad and will expect a tough test at the Serie A side. Napoli probable XI: Rina, Hysaj, Albiol.

The Apple iOS 11.1 was recently released as an update, advertised as Apple's first milestone upgrade.

Users have come up with several quick fixes, including turning off predictive text via settings or downloading a third party keyboard from the App Store.

The BBC has contacted Apple for comment. Which, judging by the fact that "I" is a relatively important letter in the English language, will probably be sooner than later.

"This can occur in more extreme cases such as when the same high contrast image is continuously displayed for prolonged periods of time".

While unusual bugs and weird software problems are nothing new for recent software launches, it is a bit ironic for Apple to have this problem considering the ubiquity of the lowercase "i" in its products.
