Forget Bugatti, Koenigsegg Agera becomes fastest auto in the world

Koenigsegg Agera RS

Sweden's Koenigsegg has claimed the production vehicle land speed record with its Agera RS hypercar.

The video shows both runs: one with a top speed of about 438km/h, the other way up there at 457km/h.

He on Saturday drove the customer-owned machine to a new record of 277.9 miles per hour on a closed 12-mile section of Highway 160 just outside of Pahrump, Nevada.

The Agera RS used in the attempt is the same one that recently set a time of 37.28 seconds for the 0-250-0 miles per hour run.

The previous record was held by the Venom GT, built by Texas-based auto tuning company Hennessey. According to the video, the Koenigsegg Agera RS topped out at 284 miles per hour on its second run - averaging 277.9 miles per hour after both runs.

Previously the world record was held by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport which clocked 269.86mph in 2010. On Saturday, factory driver Niklas Lilja reached 277.9 miles per hour (447.1km/h) in one of the company's Agera RS hypercars. Earlier in October, Koenigsegg took another record from Bugatti, smashing the 0-400-0 km/h record. On one run Lilja reached 271.2 miles per hour, and on the other he reached 284.6 miles per hour.

The Koenigsegg Agera RS was able to pull off the feat thanks to its 1,160-horsepower 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, not to mention the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires wrapped around all four wheels.

According to Jim Lau from Racelogic - the folks who helped verify the speed with various VBox data loggers - the event was actually put on by Koenigsegg owners.

The French carmaker originally set the record for a test they invented in just 42 secs, adds the newspaper, but this was quickly beaten by the Koenigsegg Agera RS's time of 36 secs.
