The Trump administration just lifted an Obama-era ban on elephant hunting

French actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot had previously criticized US President Donald Trump over his administration's move to loosen restrictions on hunting bears and wolves on federally protected land in Alaska

The move would reverse a policy implemented by the Republican president's Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service disclosed at a meeting in Tanzania organized by a pro-trophy hunting group that it would allow the import of trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia through 2018.

Conservation groups quickly responded to the ban reversal, criticizing not only the Trump administration's reasoning, but also their timing. Add Trump Administration as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Trump Administration news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Elephants are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, but a provision in the act allows the government to give permits to import these trophies if there is evidence to suggest that hunting benefits conservation for that species.

"Legal, well-regulated sport hunting as part of a sound management program can benefit the conservation of certain species by providing incentives to local communities to conserve the species and by putting much-needed revenue back into conservation", a spokesperson for the agency said in a statement.

In 2014, U.S. big game hunters killing elephants in Zimbabwe were banned from bringing their trophies home, on the basis that the country had failed to show that it was taking elephant management seriously.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Thursday referred questions about the policy change to the Fish and Wildlife Service, saying no announcement had yet been "finalized".

Trophies from elephants legally hunted in two African countries can now be brought back to the U.S.

Since 2001, Zimbabwe's elephant population has reportedly declined, while elephant population in Zambia has also declined in some regions.

According to the census, elephants saw "substantial declines along the Zambezi River", in Zambia while other areas of that country were stable.

The Fish and Wildlife Service has been talking with wildlife officials in Zimbabwe since the ban was announced in 2014.

Pacelle, of the Humane Society, noted that corruption in the Zimbabwean government was a concern when the United States banned trophy imports from the nation in 2014.

Animal rights activists and environmental groups expressed skepticism Thursday that killing elephants could help save them.

According to the United Nations, as many as 100,000 African elephants were killed between 2010 and 2012.

The move triggered protests from conservation groups and a frenzy on social media from opponents who posted pictures of Trump sons Donald Jr. and Eric, who are avid hunters, posing with the cut-off tail of a slain elephant and other dead wild animals on Twitter. In 2016, after listing African lion populations as threatened or endangered depending on their location on the continent, the agency established specific requirements for allowing imports of their trophies. "Additional killing of elephants in these countries, even if legal, is not sustainable and is not now supporting conservation efforts that contribute towards the recovery of the species", they said at the time.
