Here's why Gerry Adams is the newest big thing on Snapchat

McDonald slams rivals over rejection of potential Government partnership

Gerry Adams is expected to announce at his Sinn Fein party's annual conference in Dublin on Saturday his plans to step down after 34 years as the dominant figurehead of Irish republicanism.

"Leadership means knowing when it is time for change and that time is now", he said, adding the move was part of an ongoing process of leadership transition within the party.

Although many identify Adams as a member of the IRA since 1966 and a commander for decades, Adams has long insisted he was never a member. "That time is now", Adams said in an emotional speech to a packed party conference.

Sinn Fein has achieved solid progress in the Republic of Ireland, according to the latest opinion polls.

He was a key figure in Ireland's republican movement, which seeks to take Northern Ireland out of the U.K. and unite it with the Republic of Ireland.

The Good Samaritan then became the target of the naked kidnappers, who crashed their BMW into the rear of the passerby's truck. She did not know whether they were naked at the time of the kidnapping, or whether they removed their clothes after.

Mary Lou McDonald, 48, is considered the clear favourite to take Adams's place.

The 69-year-old veteran of his party's struggle to end the partition of Ireland told party members that a special meeting would be called next year to elect a successor.

"Under a new Sinn Fein leader I think anything is possible", said David Farrell, politics professor at University College Dublin.

The Belfast Agreement of 1998 laid the foundation for a peace deal which fell short of the IRA's goal of a united Ireland, but the movement largely remained united behind the leadership of Martin McGuinness and his longtime colleague, Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams. Michelle O'Neill, 40, was elected as Sinn Fein's leader at Stormont (Northern Ireland parliament).

Sinn Fein has worked with its rival Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) since 2007, but the arrangement collapsed in January after DUP leader Arlene Foster refused to cede to Sinn Fein's demands to step aside.
