Turkey indicates priorities in Syria before meeting in Sochi

Putin says he will talk to Trump following Assad meeting

Russia´s president Vladimir Putin met with his embattled Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, the Kremlin said in a statement on Tuesday.

The two leaders discussed the situation in Syria and terrorism more broadly, the official said, as well as the state of affairs in Afghanistan, Ukraine and North Korea. Calls with Trump and leaders of other "countries in the region" are planned for Tuesday.

"I think now the most important thing is to launch political processes, and I am pleased to see your readiness to work with everyone desiring peace and solution", the Russian President said.

The convocation of "an inclusive inter-Syrian dialogue" is aimed at restoring confidence between different factions and seeking compromises in the interests of a united and strong Syria, the statement read, Xinhua news agency reported.

Trump names North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism
United Nations spokesperson Farhan Haq said the UN has "nothing to say" about the U.S. designation of North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism .

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders confirmed the call, and said a readout from the USA side will be coming soon.

Trump and Putin spoke informally several times earlier this month when they attended a summit in Vietnam.

Russia, Iran and Turkey - all of which have backed Assad's forces - have authored a peace initiatives in an effort to resolve the Syrian civil war that has been raging since 2011.

The informal talks resulted in a joint statement from the USA and Russian Federation in the Syrian conflict that said the two leaders "agreed that there is no military solution to the conflict in Syria", and pledged to work to develop an "ultimate political solution" to the conflict. If Erdogan decides to proceed with his plans on the military operation in Afrin, it may create an additional trouble- spot in a war-torn Syria and create an influx of refugees.
