It's confirmed, different types of alcohol trigger different emotions in people

English actor Michael Caine as Jack Carter and Ian Hendry as Eric Paice in Mike Hodges' thriller 'Get Carter', 1970. Whisky can bring out the worst in people

Research has found that different types of alcohol have different effects on personality. "Emotions experienced could also be related to when the alcohol is drunk, the levels of alcohol within each beverage type and the different compounds found in different drinks".

The study drew on data gathered by the Global Drug Survey, an independent research organisation, which runs annual self-funded surveys.

NHS researchers tracked the responses of just under 30,000 18- to 34 year olds from 21 countries who participated in the questionnaire.

Beer had perhaps the least remarkable effect on most people: Although it can boost confidence and relax you a bit, as evinced by its percentages of 44.54 and 49.87 respectively, and maybe make you a little sleepy (hi there, 38.92 reporting rate), the beverage's scores in everything else where wholly ordinary, especially in comparison to some of the other options on the list: Spirits will make you more energized, ill, aggressive, and restless; spirits and red wine will make you more tearful; and both kinds of wine will make you feel sexier. In the heaviest drinking group, over 60 percent reported feelings of aggression from drinking.

Women were significantly more likely than men to associate each feeling - except for aggression- with all types of alcohol. Talking about how different types of alcohol make you feel depends on what are you drinking. "This global study suggests even today consuming spirits is more likely to result in feelings of aggression than other drinks", said study co-author Professor Mark Bellis of Public Health Wales' Director of Policy, Research and International Development.

Not just the men, women also reported that certain type of alcohol helped to achieve the certain type of feelings for them.

Shootout in Delhi's Dwarka, five criminals arrested
Five people were apprehended in a shootout with Delhi and Punjab police at Dwarka Mor Metro Pillar 768. India TVsaid the firing started after the suspected gang of carjackers refused to surrender.

What's more, spirit drinkers were also the most likely to feel confident (59%), energised (58%) or sexy (42%). Almost a third (30 per cent) of spirit drinkers associated the drink with feelings of aggression compared with around 2.5 per cent of red wine drinkers. And beer followed closely behind in second place.

The researchers from Public Health Wales and King's College London conclude: "Understanding emotions associated with alcohol consumption is imperative to addressing alcohol misuse, providing insight into what emotions influence drink choice between different groups in the population". It showed that they were six times more aggressive than the off and on alcohol users.

One in four wine drinkers said they felt sexier after having a couple of glasses.

Red wine is more associated with feeling relaxed. That sounds like a contradiction, but it likely suggests that these are people who tend to use booze to heighten all sorts of feelings, from celebrating to trying to feel better to wallowing in pain.

Among lovers of beer, wine and soft drinks for those who as a result of their use begins to experience fits of rage and a desire to get involved in a fight, extremely small - only 5-8 percent.
