Jeff Bezos Worth Over $100B After Amazon's Black Friday Rally

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is the world’s richest man by quite some margin

This week, however, Bloomberg reports that the founder and CEO of Amazon reached a far higher echelon: the club of those worth $100 billion. Black Friday sales helped Amazon shares to jump more than 2 percent and online holiday sales increase by more than 18 percent since a year ago, Bloomberg reported.

Forbes, which also tracks real-time net worth, put Bezos at $99.6 billion. Bezos' fortune now sits at $100.3 billion, up $2.4 billion following a 2 percent increase in Amazon's shares.

The site notes that Bill Gates, whose current value is pegged at $89 billion, would have about $150 billion right now had he not given so much away to various philanthropic causes.

Commentators point out that Amazon's upswing followed Friday's broad market push that saw the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index hit another record at 2602, the first time it has closed above 2600.

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos has become the first person to surpass a $100bn fortune since Bill Gates in 1999

Online sales for Black Friday are up 18.4% from a year ago, while the projected final spend is $5bn, according to Adobe Analytics.

Bezos grabbed the title of world's richest person in July, when he briefly passed Bill Gates.

Gates, who now has a net worth of $86.8 billion, is estimated to have had a net worth of $150 billion had he not given so much of his fortune to charity. That said, Gates has given a significant amount of his fortune away to charity and in acts of philanthropy.

Amazon shares are up 58% this year, enough to enrich Bezos by about $34 billion. This past June he asked Twitter for ideas on how to be a better philanthropist. The 53-year-old's investments in two other companies are The Washington Post and space tourism firm Blue Origin.
