Microsoft finally brings full Office support to all Chromebooks

Microsoft Office for Chromebooks now live

All devices can now download the Microsoft Office applications from the Google Play Store, no matter who manufactured the device.

This week Chromebooks are once again able to use the entire Microsoft Office app suite VIA Android apps.

Office apps have always been corralled to only a particular set of Chromebooks, with no apparent rules or reason behind it.

It has been a long journey to get here, with random individual Chromebook models gaining and losing Office support for the past year, but now, according to a report from Chrome Unboxed, the office suite is live on all Chromebooks.

Microsoft has been trying its best to make its apps and services available across all platforms and devices. The addition of the popular software suite will also appeal to students who can now use either G-Suite or Microsoft Office to finish their assignments. These versions of the Microsoft Office apps require a subscription to Office 365, and those without said subscription will only be able to use these apps to view files. Before now, users have been relegated to Google Docs and other Google apps - as well as a handful of Android apps and/or Chrome apps for all their document needs.

Death toll from Sinai mosque explosion hits 155
Egypt later said it would delay the opening of the Rafah border crossing to Gaza after the attack due to security concerns. The security officers said the men opened fire on worshipers during prayers while driving in off-road vehicles.

Although there's been no official word from either party, Chrome Unboxed has been tinkering with the various offerings and it appears that they are all now working as they should.

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

Of course, Chromebook users haven't been completely devoid of productivity apps until now.

Last year, Microsoft revealed that machines with a display at or below 10.1-inches would be classified as a "true mobile device". If you own a Chromebook, are you available to download the Office apps from the Google Play Store? The smaller iPad Pro enjoys free access to the Microsoft Office apps, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro needs a subscription.
