"The president certainly finds an extreme amount of value and respect for these individuals which is why he brought them and invited them to come to the White House, spent time with them, recognising and honouring them today", she said. "Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago".
"I just want to thank you because you're very, very special people".
Ms Warren was first called Pocahontas by Donald Trump in May 2016, when he was running for office.
Referring to the concept of Trump's words being a "racial slur", Sanders said: "I think that's a ridiculous response".
Pocahontas was a Powhatan Native American woman, born around 1595, known for her involvement with English colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. World War II Navajo Code Talker and Iwo Jima survivor Thomas Begay is one of the last surviving code talkers. Begaye discussed some of the history of Jackson before stating that "we survived him" and Native Americans will "survive every president from here on into the future".
Trump, who has identified Warren as "Pocahontas" before, made the remark during a ceremony Monday recognizing Native American code talkers who served during World War II.
He then went on to address the Navajos and said: "But you know what, I like you".
It's confirmed, different types of alcohol trigger different emotions in people
Women were significantly more likely than men to associate each feeling - except for aggression- with all types of alcohol . Not just the men, women also reported that certain type of alcohol helped to achieve the certain type of feelings for them.
Trump did actually praise the bravery of the code talkers at the event: "You are special people".
But White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders defended the president's comments after being grilled by reporters over why the president felt the need to say something "offensive" during the press briefing on Monday.
The Navajo code talkers used their native language to outwit USA enemies and exchange classified military information throughout both World Wars.
"I don't believe it is appropriate to use a racial slur in any context".
Trump's nickname references the false claim to Native American ancestry Warren staked during her academic career.
"It is deeply unfortunate that the president of the United States can't even make it through a ceremony honouring these heroes without throwing out a racial slur". "He did this because he thinks that he can bully me and shut me up".
