US Service Member Killed in Afghanistan in Combat

The US military said the incident happened on New Year's Day in the Achin district of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan.

The Islamic State in Khorasan, the militant group's Afghan affiliate, established roots there in 2014, and the USA military launched raids and airstrikes there in 2017 as it stepped up its campaign against the group. The others were able to go back into service.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own", said Gen. John Nicholson, the top commander of USA forces in Afghanistan.

"At this very hard time our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of our fallen and wounded brothers", Nicholson added.

Sen. Cory Booker says the Army had identified the dead soldier as Mihail Golin, of Fort Lee, New Jersey.

The United States hopes 2018 will see the Afghans finally seize the momentum against the Taliban after years of stalemate.

President Trump said in August he'd up the number of airstrike, while no longer announcing the number of troops stationed in Afghanistan.

More than 8,000 civilians were killed or wounded in conflict-related violence in the first nine months of previous year, according to data compiled by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.
