Manafort sues Mueller, Justice Department over Russian Federation probe

Former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele speaks to the media London

President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has filed a lawsuit against the United States Department of Justice, FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Manafort's attorneys argued in the 17-page complaint that Mueller should not have been given the initial authority to extend his probe beyond potential collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, according to the civil complaint.

Manafort is now one of four people facing charges stemming from the Mueller probe.

"I can assure you that the special counsel is conducting himself consistently with our understanding of the scope of the investigation", said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who Manafort accused of granting Mueller too much leeway with the Russian Federation probe. The suit claims that Mueller went beyond the intended scope of his investigation when he indicted Manafort.

A Justice Department spokesperson said by email: "The lawsuit is frivolous, but the defendant is entitled to file whatever he wants".

The pacer said because of the variety in their attack, there is a lot to learn from each other. It will be a challenge to bowl with the red Kookaburra ball, but we are up for it".

Manafort's lawyer did not immediately return a call seeking comment, and a spokesman for Mueller's office declined to comment.

"Those alleged dealings had no connection whatsoever to the 2016 presidential election or even to Donald Trump".

The focus is on a part of the Rosenstein order that says that Mueller may investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation". (Flynn is also Trump's former national security adviser.) Gates has pleaded not guilty, while Papadopoulos and Flynn have pleaded guilty.

The legal action represents a new tack in a broader effort by supporters of the president to push back on the special counsel.
