HTC announces Vive Pro with better specs for enterprise

The Vive competes with Facebook’s Oculus amongst high-end systems

HTC has bumped the resolution of the dual-OLED panels in the new Vive Pro to 2880x1600 (1400x1600 per eye, and 615PPI) which is a huge 78% increase from the 2160x1200 (1080x1200 per eye) of the first Vive.

"Vive we truly believe is the industry standard when it comes to VR", said Daniel O'Brien, general manager of the HTC Vive.

The Vive Pro will also improve the audio experience. With this new set of headphones, the whole headset is able to be more balanced than the original. The new headphones are also of higher quality, with a built-in amplifier to provide a premium audio experience. This is meant to be more comfortable and can be customized with a sizing dial that reduces the amount of weight on the front of the headset, the company said.

HTC began hinting at the Vive Pro last week by posting "new year, new resolution" messages on social media and within the company's SteamVR "Home" hub.

That's certainly the case with most of the virtual reality headsets we've seen for the past couple of years, with only mobile VR - the Gear VR and Google Daydream headsets - really escaping the wired fate.

We speculated that HTC could be preparing to announce Vive 2.0, and suggested that it may include a higher-resolution display, updated optics, Valve's new Steam VR Tracking 2.0, wireless data transmission, and maybe eye-tracking sensors.

HTC say details on the Vive Pro's price and release "will be made available soon". Where before a cord (cord bundle) of significant size needed to run from the headset, over the head, and down the back of the user, now noone will need any of that business going on.

Additionally, HTC announced plans to release its own Vive Wireless Adapter, which, like the TPCast, will plug into a Vive-equipped computer to broadcast its video signal wirelessly. Featuring Intel's WiGig technology, the unit operates in what HTC calls an "interference-free" 60Ghz band for better performance. The headset itself looks far less clunky than the original, and HTC has added a blue color to the key elements and the front display.

The Vive Pro and the wireless adaptor are two features that may help foster more interest from mainstream consumers. HTC hasn't disclosed exactly how much lighter it will be.
