The princes, who were arrested Thursday after staging a sit-in, also were seeking compensation "for a death sentence that was issued against one of their cousins", the statement said, adding that the cousin was convicted of murder and executed in 2016.

Saudi Arabia past year rounded up dozens of royal family members, current and former senior officials in the crackdown on corruption that has also strengthened the power of the heir to the Saudi throne, Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

During his sudden rise to power, the crown prince also has sidelined his most powerful rivals and moved to silence dissenting voices in an effort to consolidate his authority before eventually inheriting the throne from his father, King Salman, analysts said. The country plans to slash its generous welfare program and open energy giant Saudi Aramco to partial privatization.

Dozens of other high-profile royal figures who were detained in 2017 during an anti-corruption drive have been detained inside a luxury hotel.

The cuts continue and the subsidies for members of the royal family were reduced. Income remains tax exempt. As per the International Labour organisation, the percentage of jobless people in Saudi is 32% (15 to 24 aged people) and 1.18 million Saudis are engaged in government sector while 1.23 million people are pensioners.
