'Stop resisting!' US teacher handcuffed and arrested after questioning pay

In this Monday Jan. 8 2018 image made from a video provided by KATC-TV middle-school English teacher Deyshia Hargrave is handcuffed by a city marshal after complying with a marshal’s orders to leave a Vermilion Parish School Board meeting in Abbevill

A teacher in Louisiana was removed Monday night from a school board meeting after a confrontation regarding teacher's pay.

Deyshia Hargrave, a teacher at Rene Rost Middle School, addressed the school board during pubic comments to discuss teacher salaries and pay raises, KATC-TV reports. "I feel like it's a slap in the face to all the teachers, cafeteria workers, any other support staff we have".

After she asked several questions, board President Anthony Fontana ruled Hargrave out of order and warned her that the public comment portion of the meeting was not a question-and-answer session. The disturbing incident took place after Hargrave asked school board members to justify the massive raise while teachers and school employees had reportedly gone without a pay hike in years.

A city marshal on duty at the meeting approached her as she continued to speak and directed her to leave the room.

Superintendent Jerome Puyau told the ABC affiliate KATC that he had called the police afterwards to notify them the school board did not want to press charges for the meeting disruption, but it remains unclear whether the arresting officer was acting under his own accord or at the direction of a member of the school board.

She is now out on bond.

Board members told NBC News that the meeting was called to vote on whether to approve a new contract for superintendent Jermone Puyau.

"I personally apologize for the Vermilion Parish School Board", she said, adding, "This is a sad day for Vermilion Parish".

A Louisiana teacher who was forcibly removed from a school board hearing in a viral video clip was booked on two crimes and bonded out of jail Tuesday morning, court documents show.

Global News reached out to the Abbeville Marshal's Office, but no one was unavailable for comment.

Aside from these remarks, our association will honor Ms. Hargrave's wishes and refrain from any additional comments at this time, as the case is ongoing.
