Google secretly acquired a United Kingdom startup that could make smartphone speakers obsolete

Google has bought a company that turns any surface into a speaker

Google appears to have acquired Redux, a UK-based audio startup with innovative in-screen speaker technology, according to a report from Bloomberg. One obvious benefit there is the fact that this would allow manufacturers to remove speaker modules and free up space for other components, like bigger batteries.

Social media promotion of the company through its own accounts ended in April 2017 while financial accounts for NVF Tech - the name under which Redux is registered - show Google employees were made directors in July, while employees of Redux and its investor Arie Capital were removed.

When Apple Inc. (AAPL) ditched the standard 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone, and it said the reason was "courage"? that wasn't the reason, the actual reason was simple: in the ongoing fight to make thinner smartphones that pack in more and more tech, space is at a premium. No word on how much it paid, but the $5 million Redux raised in March suggests it could be around that figure.

The teams traded field goals in the final minute of the first half and the Bison took a 17-6 lead into halftime. Stick is completing 62 percent with a program-record 27 touchdown passes to just eight picks.

Redux was founded in 2013 out of Cambridge, and built technology that uses vibrations to turn surfaces of phones or tablets into speakers or provide haptic feedback. As per the company's LinkedIn page, Redux has 50 pending patent and has been granted 178 patents.

The company now has 178 granted patents and more than 50 patents pending. I am not sure but the display-speaker integration may also help Google improve the haptic feedback on their phones. Redux has demoed the tech with a custom-built PC monitor.

Right ahead of the Pixel 2's unveiling last fall, it was announced that Google purchased a heap of smartphone engineers from HTC to spearhead smartphone projects for the coming years. This technology has interesting ramifications and possible uses in Google's consumer lineup.
