Winter is Coming! Tallahassee Sees First Snow in 28 Years

It's a rare sight snow in Tallahassee Florida. Tallahassee Police Dept

It's called snow, something residents of North Florida hadn't seen in nearly three decades until on Wednesday, and it is part of a deep-freeze striking the entire US East Coast.

Although bomb cyclones are not necessarily uncommon, they can result in powerful storms under certain conditions, and forecasters have warned states lining the east coast that this bomb cyclone could be just as powerful as Hurricane Sandy.

Winter Storm Grayson brought a mess of snow, sleet and freezing rain from northern Florida into the Carolinas Jan. 3-4, 2017.

Bloomberg reports that parts of Florida, including its capital of Tallahassee, already experienced snowfall earlier on Wednesday.

Tallahassee wasn't the only Florida community to be impacted by the winter storm.

"In fact, from the year 1900 through at least 1950, there was no measurable snow". There was also a light glaze of ice forming on surfaces in downtown Tallahassee, according to the National Weather Service. The snow stopped in the middle of the afternoon Wednesday, but Tallahassee officials still warned people to be careful while driving on the roads.

"It's just so nuts", Goldstein said.

In Savannah, a coastal city that hasn't seen measurable snowfall since February 2010, up to 2 inches (5 centimeters) of snow and sleet were forecast.

The National Weather Service said a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain was expected Wednesday mostly along the Southeast's Atlantic coast. Police even had to close the bridges and overpasses in the city out of concern for drivers.

In central Florida, the states largest theme parks announced that water attractions such as Disneys Typhoon Lagoon, Universal Orlandos Volcano Bay and SeaWorlds Aquatica were closed.

This time, the snow accumulation was more significant farther north in Georgia, where homeowners reported a half-inch of snow in Valdosta.

Due to weather conditions, some airlines are allowing passengers to rebook flights without paying a cancellation fee -including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United Airlines as near-blizzard conditions are expected to blast through the eastern United States.

Towns from southeast Georgia up through Norfolk, Virginia were bracing for snow and ice through Wednesday evening.

Sharon Rosenberg, a 35-year-old physical therapist who has lived in the state capital her entire life, said her family bundled up and went outside early in the morning hoping to catch a glimpse of the snow falling.

As much of the nation is gripped by cold weather, there are several places in the south east getting snow.
