Almost 100000 displaced by fighting in northwest Syria's Idlib since December 1

An IRC aid worker speaks with a man whose family has been displaced in Syrias Idlib province

Syria's state media say government forces and their allies are approaching a sprawling rebel-held air base in the northwestern province of Idlib from different directions.

A military media unit run by the Assad regime's Lebanese ally Hezbollah, and a Britain-based war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said on Friday the army had recaptured several villages taken in the rebel counterattack. Assad has defeated rebels in many parts of western Syria with critical help from Russian Federation and Iran.

Idlib province is nearly entirely held by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a jihadist outfit dominated by Al-Qaeda's former Syrian affiliate.

Turkey has been a major backer of Syrian rebels, but has recently been working with Damascus's allies Iran and Russian Federation in meetings with the stated aim of reducing violence.

Syrian troops and allied forces absorbed the attack and regained control of some positions they had withdrawn from, it said.

Man dies in Stockholm after picking up suspected grenade
Stockholm police told the Swedish news agency TT that the injured were a 60-year old man and a 45-year-old woman. Police declined to confirm that report , for which the newspaper named no sources.

Their major goal is to drive back the Syrian army from the strategic Abu al-Duhur air base in the southeastern countryside of Idlib, whose falling will deal a big blow to the rebels in Idlib as well as in the southern countryside of Aleppo province in northern Syria.

The al-Qaida-linked Levant Liberation Committee (LLC) refused to join the two rebel operation parts, and made a decision to fight the Syrian army alone, according to the report.

Turkey has accused the Syrian government of using the presence of the Nusra Front, which now fights under the banner of the Tahrir al-Sham alliance, as an excuse to attack civilians and moderate opposition groups.

"With Allah's blessings we drew plans and prepared ourselves and are encircling them", said Abu al Naji, a commander from Tahrir al Sham. A Syrian military source denied this and dismissed rebel talk of a counter-attack as propaganda.
