Winter storm brings snow to Florida, closes southern airports

'Bomb cyclone' hits US East Coast energy, power supply

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 3.

Thousands of flights were canceled, firefighters scrambled to rescue motorists from flooded streets in Boston, National Guard troops were mobilized in the Northeast and New York City's two main airports halted flights because of whiteout conditions.

This strong gradient is caused by the big difference in temperature and moisture between the dry cold air moving south from Canada, and warm moist air coming in from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

This new wave of cold weather this weekend will be close to the level of cold experienced at the end of 2017 and start of 2018 in the Midwest, central Appalachians and interior South, according to forecasters. Very cold temperatures both before and in the storm's wake also contribute to the impact.

Across central and northern Florida and parts of Georgia and the Carolinas, schools were closed or closed early because of weather.

Blizzard warnings have been issued for the Virginia Tidewater region up the coast to eastern ME after parts of Florida, Georgia and SC were shocked with rare ice and snow early Wednesday.

In the storm's wake, the mother lode of numbing cold will crash south - likely the last but most bitter in brutal blasts since Christmas Eve.

DJs React to Pres. Trump's Nuclear Button Tweet
Trump, who hurled fresh insults at the North Korean leader this week, took credit for any dialogue that takes place. Foal Eagle is a series of exercises created to test the readiness of the United States and South Korean militaries.

But the weather phenomena they describe aren't as uncommon as the words might suggest - there are probably 40-50 storms in the northern hemisphere that qualify as bombs every year.

Parts of SC could see 5 to 6 inches of snow. The airport at Savannah got 1.2 inches - the most the city had experienced in 28 years.

On Thursday, more than 5,500 businesses and homes were reported to be without power in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the tip of Cape Cod where hurricane-force winds were in play. "Then, the city got 6 inches".

But a Nor'easter is rumbling up the Atlantic Coast and it is bringing snow with it.

Two of the South's iconic coastal cities are weathering their heaviest snowfall in almost 30 years. Snow, sleet and freezing rain may increase in eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia by Wednesday afternoon. As of Wednesday evening there were still more than 12,400 Georgia Power customers, more than 10,200 Florida Power & Light customers and more than 2,700 South Carolina Electric & Gas customers affected, the utilities reported.

More than 5,000 USA airline flights were canceled.

The bomb cyclone, which developed overnight, occurs when a low-pressure system has a significant, rapid drop in atmospheric pressure.

This bomb cyclone dropped 53 millibars in just 21 hours, intensifying faster than any such occurrence in recent history. Nor'easters will track northward along the East Coast.
