Mets, Adrian Gonzalez agree to deal | What it means

The Mets have reportedly agreed to a deal with Adrian Gonzalez. More

At first glance, it's a puzzling move for Mets.

The Mets and Adrian Gonzalez have agreed to a one-year deal, under which NY will pay just $545,000 of the first baseman's $22.36 million salary next season, according to multiple reports. Gonzalez was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Atlanta Braves earlier this offseason, but was released by his new team shortly thereafter.

When the New York Mets signed free agent Jay Bruce on Wednesday, there was talk that the veteran outfielder might see some action at first base. So basically, Gonzalez could be had on the free-agent market for an extremely low price.

The 35-year-old five-time all-star has been a Gold Glove victor and Silver Slugger recipient. Atlanta, in turn, quickly released him, making him a free agent.

Huge swath of United States hit by winter storm bringing, snow, cold
The blast of winter weather and accompanying plunging temperatures has been linked to at least 17 deaths as far south as Texas. On its Twitter account, the Tallahassee Police Department warned motorists that ice could form on bridges early Wednesday.

A five-time All-Star, Gonzalez, 35, compiled a.242/.287/.355 slash line last season and was limited to 71 games due to back injuries with the National League champion Dodgers. It was the fewest games of playing time he saw since 2005, when he was a member of the Texas Rangers. Over an 11-year stretch from 2006-2016 as a member of the San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox and Dodgers, he mashed 301 home runs with a.292 batting average and.364 on-base percentage.

He is a five-time All-Star and a four-time Gold Glove victor. Rather, he would be available to replace or at least tutor Dominic Smith, whose first partial season with the Mets did not convince the club he is ready to be the everyday first baseman.

The Mets are looking to give Smith - who hit just.198 with nine home runs and 26 RBI in 49 major-league games last season - a chance to develop a little more.
