Walmart offers to help customers destroy unused opioid prescriptions

Walmart offers free opioid disposal product in effort to fight painkiller abuse epidemic

If the patient has leftover medication, they just pour the powder in the bottle with the meds, add warm water and shake.

Roughly 53 percent of people who misused prescription opioids got them from family or friends, according to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

The company said on Wednesday that it will provide packets of DisposeRx, a powder that when combined with water and opioid painkiller prescriptions turns the pills into a gel that can then be thrown away safely.

What Walmart wants to do by including packets along with the prescription is to make it possible for you to dispose of those five pills at home for free.

Walmart, the third-largest pharmacy in the United States, wants to give people who receive prescriptions that are frequently misused a safe way to get rid of them for free.

Wall Street exec sworn in on JFK Bible to replace Christie
He said that his vision for a "stronger and fairer" New Jersey includes criminal justice reform and marijuana legalization. The new governor called for the wealthy to pay higher taxes, more funding for Planned Parenthood and a $15 minimum wage.

Walmart says patients will receive a free DisposeRx packet and opioid safety information brochure whenever filling and picking up any new Class II opioid prescription at Walmart pharmacies.

"The health and safety of our patients is a critical priority; that's why we're taking an active role in fighting our nation's opioid issue", said Walmart's Marybeth Hays. Existing pharmacy patients can also request a free DisposeRx packet at any time, including at the upcoming Walmart Wellness Day event scheduled for January 20 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. all Walmart locations nationwide. Those with chronic Class II opioid prescriptions will be able to get one every six months. People can also bring leftover opioids to hospital pharmacies or police stations for disposal. And about one third of medications sold go unused, making them more readily available for abuse. Too often, these unsafe narcotics remain unsecured where children, teens or visitors may have access.

Most recently, CVS joined the fight against opioid abuse by expanding its prescription drug disposal program to 750 of its pharmacies across the country.

Walmart is trying to help curb America's opioid crisis. In September, CVS Health said it would limit opioid prescriptions to seven-day supplies for new patients facing certain acute conditions.
