Australia crash to one-day series defeat

Mitchell Starc is looking to step

With Buttler unbeaten on 70 and his side on a 254-6 with just three overs remaining, England were looking at a decidedly mediocre total. but then the fireworks began.

Third umpire Kumar Dharmasena deliberated for just under four minutes, before deciding there wasn't enough evidence to overturn the soft on-field call of out.

Morgan, who became the highest run-scorer in Australia-England ODIs, built a steadying half-century partnership with Buttler until he fell for 41 in the 35th over.

In comparison, England had no such trouble lifting the run rate late in their innings courtesy of Buttler and Woakes' 113-run 71-ball stand to end the innings.

With Smith (45) and Mitchell Marsh (55) going well and Australia 181 for three in the 34th over chasing England's 302 for six, man-of-the-match Jos Buttler took what looked a smart low catch to his right.

The easiest of the catches to go to grass was a howler by Cameron White, who failed to get a hand to a skied chance from Moeen Ali when he was on one.

Aaron Finch and his skipper Smith added 69 for the third wicket but the former was out for 62, trapped lbw on review by leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Stoinis and Paine (31 not out) tried to do so and put on a stand of 74 that set up a tense finale, before some adept bowling from Wood ensured the hosts needed an unlikely 22 off the final over.

Buttler took a single off the next ball and didn't get back on strike until the final delivery, but managed to squeeze Starc's attempted yorker into the legside field and scramble through to reach his hundred, leaping into the air with excitement.

Australia have made changes to their one-day team as they attempt to save the one-day series against England after they elected to bowl first at the SCG.

Australia recalled pacemen Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood for the match, the first time in the one-day series that the trio of Cummins, Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, who spearheaded the Ashes win, had been reunited.

Each offered a threat with their pace and accuracy, ensuring England's batsmen were never able to settle, even after getting starts.

It was working well until Adam Zampa bowled Bairstow for 39 to reduce the tourists to 90-3.

But after Morgan and Buttler had patiently rebuilt the innings, Australia's bowlers had no answer to the inventive and aggressive late assault.

England ODI captain Eoin Morgan said Buttler had engineered of the best wins he'd been part of.

"Something to look at for Adelaide, hopefully I can do it a lot better and start helping this team win some games of cricket".

"I think I'll probably do it for the rest of the series", Smith said, after having batted at No.3 since mid-2016.

"I've got to play some better cricket".
