Trump On Citizenship Path: 'It's Gonna Happen At Some Point'

Dana Milbank: What on Earth does President Trump want?

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he's open to an immigration plan that will provide a pathway to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of young people who were brought to the country as children and are now here illegally.

A one-page memo sent to congressional Republicans Thursday afternoon backs a 10-12-year path to citizenship for not just the roughly 700,000 enrolled in the expiring DACA program, but for other "DACA-eligible illegal immigrants" who are in the US illegally and were brought to the country as children. He said he wants $25 billion in a fund to build a wall along the southern border with Mexico.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said he had offered and then rescinded border wall funding in exchange for Dreamer protections, said Wednesday he was looking for a reset.

In reaching a deal to reopen government, Senate's Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Congress would aim to negotiate an immigration agreement by February 8.

The White House says it will release a "legislative framework" for an immigration deal on Monday.

"The president wants to lead on this issue, and that's exactly what we're going to do", Sanders said. Trump announced he was ending DACA previous year.

Trump, Theresa May to meet at Davos economic forum
A lot of focus is expected on what President Trump says and what would be the response of other world leaders, including from Germany, France and the UK.

A year into his administration, Trump's positions on immigration remain muddled, despite insistence from the White House that he has clearly outlined his views. You said it was a day for consoling survivors and mourning those we have lost, but you said there's a time and place for political debate.

Sanders attempted to link the mass shootings with a two-year increase in violent crime in the two years before Trump became President, saying the Justice Department has "charged more defendants with violent crime offenses than any year in decades" and tallied "the most federal firearm prosecutions in a decade".

Earlier Wednesday, South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham, one of almost two dozen senators trying to find a bipartisan immigration compromise, told Roll Call the group is merely trying to craft the best bill possible.

Trump has consistently said any agreement to replace DACA has to include new measures to crack down on what he considers bad immigration policies. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said.

Sen. Chris Coons of DE said an ultra-conservative plan from the White House "absolutely could" destabilize the bipartisan talks. "This will greatly help the Senate efforts to craft a proposal which President Trump can sign into law", said Senator Lindsay Graham. "Securing the border, and closing legal loopholes, ending extended-family chain migration, canceling the visa lottery and providing a permanent solution on DACA". That suggests both parties would be allowed to offer amendments.
