To avoid swatting, mosquitoes remember your scent

Aedes aegpyti knows what you smell

Riffell is an associate professor of biology at the University of Washington in Seattle. The mosquitoes avoided the human body odor, suggesting that they had been successfully trained.

However, the study also proved that even if an individual is deemed delicious-smelling, a mosquito's preference can shift if that person's smell is associated with an unpleasant sensation.

'If you are at a party or a barbecue and you are swatting the mosquitoes, make sure that your friend next to you is active in talking and they will probably avoid you and go [for] your friend, ' said Dr Jeffrey Riffell, co-author of the study, from the University of Washington. They found that neurons were less likely to respond in mosquitoes that didn't have dopamine, leading them to conclude it was vital for the bugs to process information, too.

Further studies by the researchers then showed that dopamine was central to the mosquitoes' ability to learn.

The visual "arena" in which researchers tested the responses of mosquitoes to different odors.

When mosquitoes were exposed to two odors, one with the shock and one without, the researchers found that the insects could quickly understand the association and stay away from the odor that had produced the mechanical shock.

Researchers knew that mosquitoes don't randomly decide which individuals to bite. Apparently, they even have seasonal feeding habits: birds are their main prey in summer while mammals and birds are harangued more during other parts of the year.

Federal grand jury probing Vegas shooting
Investigators also chased 1,965 leads in the case, reviewed more than 21,000 hours of footage and issued 1,062 legal notices. The FBI has "an ongoing case against an individual of federal interest", Lombardo said, declining to elaborate.

Clement Vinauger and Chloe Lahondere are the lead authors of the study, titled "Modulation of Host Learning in Aedes Aegypti Mosquitoes".

In short, the researchers tethered mosquitoes inside a 3D printed cylindrical container equipped with lights and an odor dispenser so that they could fly in place. Additional experiments by Riffell and his team showed that dopamine is also essential in mosquito learning.

Though one of the takeaways from the study is that it might be effective to swat away mosquitoes with ferocity, the research is actually aimed at understanding mosquito behavior for the objective of mosquito control and limiting the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue, and West Nile virus.

"By understanding how mosquitoes are making decisions on whom to bite, and how learning influences those behaviours, we can better understand the genes and neuronal bases of the behaviours", Riffell said.

With this new understanding of how mosquitoes learn to avoid certain hosts, the researchers say they are now exploring mosquitoes' ability to learn and remember favored hosts. Researchers said that understanding how mosquitoes target hosts may have implications on mosquito control. "With these learning paradigms, we can explore in the future how positive and negative memories are formed in the mosquito brain, and how that influences their biting behaviors", he added.

The study, published in Current Biology, was intricately created to gauge the learning abilities of the mosquito species, Aedes aegypti. In addition to Vinauger, Lahondere and Riffel, the authors include Gabriella Wolff, Lauren Locke, Jessica Liaw and Jay Parrish from UW, plus UC-Riverside's Omar Akbari and Caltech's Michael Dickinson.
